WIAA State - Day 2

Another amazing day of track and field capped the 2012 WIAA Season on Saturday. The finals for all three divisions provided many great races and top times/distances. The athletes there observing all agreed, we need to have more Spartans at the meet in 2013...because state track is FUN. Saturday saw the girls 4 x 100m relay team of Phibi M, McKenna G, Rachel B, and Marissa H run a 50.38 for 8th place and a team point. The girls team scored 11 points on the weekend good for 22nd place in the state. On the boys side, sophomore Dauric F ran a great final moving up from the 8th seed to finish in 3rd place in the 110m hurldes with a finals time of 14.72. The boys team scored 6 points on the weekend for a team place of 38th. The small contingent of athletes representing JMM did an amazing job of making us all proud. WIAA State - Day 1

The best of the best converged at UW-LaCrosse Friday morning to compete for WIAA State Championships. Madison Memorial sent a contingent of nine athletes to represent and they did not disappoint on the first day of competition. The weather was beautiful, the bluffs were wonderful, and the track action was amazing. On the track Daurice F started the day off with a 8th place qualifying performance in the 110m hurdles. Daurice's time of 14.97 earned him a spot in the finals on Saturday (jsonline.com photo). McKenna G ran a 12.86 for 19th place in the 100m dash. Hannah L ran a 1:00.57 in the 400m dash for 18th place. Phibi M, McKenna G, Rachel B, and Marissa H joined forces in the 4 x 100m relay  to run a time of 50.08 as the 7th best performance of the day which qualifies them for finals on Saturday. Discus flights and finals took place today and Corinne was seeded first after flights. She continued her success in the finals improving on each throw. Corinne had 3 of her seasons bests 5 throws at the state meet. Her throw of 137 feet and 4 inches were good enough for 1st place by about 8 feet. The winds were blustery Thursday night but we avoided the rain and storms that much of the state contended with for competition. They flipped the directions of the sprints and it seemed like no cross bars would ever stay on but the Madison Memorial Spartans took on the competition and had a great night. Each event only has 8 competitors at Sectionals and each athlete already represents the best from their area. The goal is to finish in the top 3 to guarantee a trip to state and a right to rerpesent Madison Memorial at the State Championships.

Athletes who competed great all season long and saw there season come to an end on Thursday night were: Nick M in the 300 hurdles (who was having a great race until the last hurdle...what desire) 8th in 44.32, KeYaunne B in the 200m dash (who came in seeded 8th and ran 2/3 of the race in qualifying position) 4th in 24.01, Blake T-J in the Pole Vault (came so close to make 13' 0" and may have needed to PR to get to state) 5th in 12' 6", and the 4 x 400m relay of Robbie E, Jordan B, Tyler M, and Josh P (who came in seeded 6th and finish 4th running close to a season best in the wind) 4th in 3:34.12.

Athletes who competed great all season and will represent Madison Memorial at State on June 1st & 2nd: Daurice F in the 110m hurdles (1st - 14.74) and 300m hurdles (3rd - 40.08), McKenna G in the 100m dash (2nd - 12.44), Marissa H in the 200m dash (2nd - 26.63), Hannah L in the 400m dash (2nd - 1:00.07), Corinne F in the discus (2nd - 125' 1") and the 4 x 100m relay of Phibi M, McKenna G, Rachel B, Marissa H, alternate Caroline S, and alternate Margot W (2nd - 50.17). We look forward to cheering on all these athletes at state.

Regionals

The WIAA Championship series began Monday night for the Madison Memorial Spartans as they competed in the division 1 regional in Waunakee. The regional meet is always a tough meet as we know that athletes are fighting to keep their season alive. There were many great performances all around the track. Some of these performances were rewarded with another opportunity to compete on Thursday at Sectionals and others had to know they ended a great season with a quality performance at Regionals. A lot of hard work and dedication went into the season to get our athletes to this point of the season. We are honored to have had our seniors be a part of this 2012 team, we look forward to the underclassmen continuing to contribute to the program in the future, and we are excited to see which athletes will take the next step from Sectionals to compete at State.

Earning an opportunity to compete for a trip to state are: Corinne F - 2nd place Discus - 120' 2" and 4th place Shot Put - 33' 6.75", McKenna G - 1st place 100m dash - 12.85, Hannah L - 1st place 400m dash - 1:01.61, 4 x 100m relay of Phibi M, McKenna G, Rachel B, and Marissa H - 1st place 50.18, and Marissa H - 2nd place 200m dash - 26.37 for the girls squad. We wish these athletes the best on Thursday at Middleton as they look to take the next step in their track careers.

We had some great performances that ended in near misses as we had many athletes come up with 5th place results. The undersclassmen who experienced this or saw the emotions that were felt by the seniors experiencing this should use it as fuel this off season to make sure that we do not have to go through this next season. Some of these performances were by: girls 4 x 800 of Sara P, Sara N, Meghan S, and Hannah L 5th place in 9:58.20, boys 4 x 800 of Ben A, Jordan B, Tyler M, and Josh P 5th place in 8:13.11, Jess F in the discus 5th place 100' 2", Marissa H in the high jump 6th place 4' 10", KeYaunne B 5th place in the 100m dash in 11.60, boys 4 x 100m relay of Alex K, KeYaunne B, Ben I, and RaQuan C 5th place in 45.44, Sara P in the 800m run 2:29.17, Alex K in the 200m dash 5th place in 23.55, and Jonah W in the 3200m run in 10:03.62. Great job this year and excellent performances to cap off the season.

EVERYONE should come out and cheer on the team Thursday for Sectionals. Competition will be held at Middleton high school. Field Events begin at 4:00pm and Running Events begin at 4:45pm. All events are final as their are only eight athletes/teams qualified per event for Sectionals. The top 3 performances on Thursday will earn trips to the WIAA State Meet.

Big 8 Conference Championships

Tuesday night the Spartan track and field competed in one of the most competitive if not THE most competitive conference in the state of Wisconsin. We battled the weather, the competition, and the ups and downs of track and field all night. In the end the girls finished in 7th place with 48 points and the boys finished in 8th place with 49 points. We have taken many strides this year as a team but have a lot of work to do to reach the goals that we as coaches know our school and our track program are capable of accomplishing. We hope to continue to build around our young group of talent.

On the girls side of competition we were led by Juniors Marrisa H and Corrine F. Marrisa placed 1st in the 200m dash in 26.99, 4th in the high jump with a leap of 5' 0", and was a member of the 4 x 200m team that finished in 5th place. Corrine took 1st place in the discus with a toss of 126' 01" and added a 5th place finish in the shot put with a put of 34' 6". The 4 x 800 team of Sara P, Danielle G, Sara N, and Hannah L combined for a 5th place finish with a time of 10:21.21 additionally McKenna G, Anna H, and Rachel B joined Marissa for the 5th place finish in the 4 x 200. McKenna also scored a 3rd place finish on her own in the 100m dash with a time of 12.92. Freshman Phibi M made the hurdle finals in the 100m hurdles and finished in 8th place with a time of 17.63 to score some team points. Hannah L ran in a super competitive 400m dash to earn a 5th place finish in 1:00.58. In total the girls team had 21 underclassmen who competed at this years Big 8 Championships and we hope these girls are hungry to improve in the off season to come back next year and score more points at the Conference Meet.

On the boys side of competitiong we were led by Sophomore Daurice F. Daurice finished in 1st place in the 110m and 300m hurdles in 15.00 and 39.64 respectively and added a 4th place jump in the long jump of 21' 4.25'. Daurice was joined in his hurdling success by Junior teammate Nick M who made the finals of the 110m hurdles and placed 6th in a competitive 300m hurldes in a time of 41.98. Blake TJ had a great night just missing out on a conference championship finishing 2nd with a vault of 12' 9". The boys relay team of Robbie E, Hunter H, Josh P, and Ben A combined in the 4 x 800m relay to place 5th in a time of 8:28.61. Alex K made the finals of the 200m dash and placed 6th in a time of 24.28. Jordan B ran a 4:42.31 to place 8th in the 1600m and score a point for the team. Jonah W ran a 9:53.24 for 6th place in the 3200m run. The 4 x 400m relay team of Robbie E, Kaayvon GH, Jordan B, and Josh P ran a 3:35.9 for 8th place. Rob S made the finals of the shot put competition and Cam N made the finals of the discus competition. Rob finished in 8th place with a toss of 45' 10". The boys have 17 returners for the Big 8 meet and will need to put in a lot of work to make strides next year and into the future. We believe it can be done because we have seen the talent on this team and look forward to combining with the great work ethic we learned this track season all year long.

Waunakee Frosh/Soph

Thursday night in Waunakee brought together some of the best young talent in the Madison area including Madison Memorial's very own freshmen and sophomore classes. It is always fun to see this young group of kids come together as a team and perform to such high abilities. As coaches we get excited about thinking what the future could hold for this group. As always we know that this can only be accomplished through hard work and dedication to the sport of track and field and the classroom over the coming years.

Christina M won the discus with a throw of 83' 5", Mariah O-F won the 300m hurdles with time of 52.0, Phibi M won the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.7, and Claire F. finished third in the shot put with a distance of 27' 2". Additionally, the boys 4x100m relay won in a time of 46.0, Ryan B. won the discus with a throw of 119' 9", Quincy M took second in the 110m hurdles in a time of 17.3, Kaayvon G-H took third in the 400m dash in a time of 54.5, Sam B. took third in the 1600m run in a time of 4:51.24, Jeremy G took third in the discus with a throw of 109' 9", and Eligh A took third in the long jump with a leap of 17' 10".

There were many PR's accomplished at Thursday nights meet. It is important that all of these athletes take full advantage of the coming weeks to finish their season with their best performances. Getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of water/fluids, and eating healthier over the coming days will help ensure this process. The best way to enjoy the end of the season is to make sure you are performing at your best.

Craig Dual Meet

Madison Memorial competed at its last dual meet Tuesday night. This means championship season is just around the corner and things will get very busy for coaches and athletes. Dual vs Parker

Track and field weather in Wisconsin giveth and taketh and tonight it giveth the Spartans a great outdoor track and field meet. Many athletes were able to take advantage of tonights nice weather for some great performances. All kids should check their results at practice tomorrow and really learn your PR and know if you improved or not at tonight's meet. As we begin to compete more, it is important that we strive for improvement at every meet. If we are running good times, jumping big heights and distances, or throwing big distances good things will happen at the end of the season.

Watertown Invitational

The boys and girls track and field teams headed to Watertown High School Friday night for our first outdoor varsity invitational. The weather was a bit dicey at the beginning with cloud cover and high winds but the bad weather blew threw early, the sun came out, and the wind calmed down for a seasonable night. It was quite evident Friday night that the varsity kids have been working hard in practice and at the duals as we competed very well in our invitational. It was great to see multiple athletes PRing and every kid competing for their places in every event. We learned a lot about our team Friday night and feel good going into the remainder of our outdoor schedule about our potential for the season. It will be important that every athlete contributes towards our season goals so that we can meet our utmost potential. Keep pushing each other in practice and being ready for meets.

The performer of the meet goes to Daurice F as he won both hurdle races running 15.05 in the 110 hurdles (Spartan Seven #6 perfomance) and 40.81 in the 300 hurdles both performances putting Daurice on the state honor roll. Additionally, Daurice added a 3rd place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19' 3".

Dual @ Sun Prairie

Tuesday night brought some nicer weather and another great opportunity to compete outdoors this season. The dual meets are learning experiences for our athletes and places to develop for the season. It is important that all Spartans take something away from tonights meet that they want to improve upon this week at practice. Every day we need to bring focus and dedication to our practices and we will continue to see PRs and improvements. Every improvement makes our team more competitive and therefor a better team. Keep up the great work at meets, practice, and in the classroom and we will have a fun finish to this season.

Event winners for the girls tonight go to McKenna G in the 100m dash, Hannah L in the 400m dash in 1:01.8, Corrine F in the Discus with a throw 121' 7", Kayley A jumped 32' 0" in the triple jump, Marissa H ran 27.1 in the 200m dash and jumped 4' 10" in the high jump, and the 4x400 relay team. The final team score of the girls dual was 85 points for Sun Prairie and 56 points for Memorial.
Event winners for the boys tonight were Daurice F in the 110m Hurdles in 14.9 and 20' 1" in the long jump, Jester W 11.2 in the 100m dash and 23.0 in the 200m dash, Ben A. running 4:43.2 in the 1600m run, Blake T-J with a vault of 12' 6" in the pole vault, Josh P 54.7 in the 400m dash and 2:06.4 in the 800m run, Jordan B. ran 10:28 in the 3200m run, and the 4x400 relay team of Ben A., Josh P., Robbie. E., and Nick M. The final team score of the boys dual was Sun Prairie 73 points and Memorial 68 points.

It was amazing to see the improvement the entire team made in just one week of practice. Some kids will compete on Friday at the varsity meet but all kids will have another week to show what improvments they can make before next week's dual meet. Set a goal this week for what you need to do to improve and work hard at improving yourself and your teammates. Communicate with your coaches so that we are all on the same page to get things accomplished.

JV Conference Invite

The track and field team sent many of our junior varsity competitors to Lussier Stadium to compete in the annual Big 8 JV Invite. This meet is an amazing learning experience and a great opportunity for these athletes to get back on the track and compete. I hope every athlete was able to learn from this experience. Whether it is race strategy, warm up techniques, hand off skills, or so much more. The better "students of the game" we become as athletes the better our team will be able to compete. Every athlete should want to learn about track and field. How every event operates, what order the events are competed, how far each event is....there is a lot about or sport which makes it complex and fun :)

No team scores are kept at this meet but performances were recorded. All athletes can see their results at practice today. Some highlights were PR's by Margot W in the 100 hurdles, Caroline S in the 100 dash, Lauren A. in the 1600 run, Julia F in the 400 dash, Emily H in the 800 run, Favour A in the 200 dash, and Tatum M in discus for the girls. Alec W. in the 100 dash, Ryan M. in the 400 dash, Ty S. in the 300 hurdles, Stefan K. in the 800 run, Connor G-T in the 3200 run, Isaac K in the shot put, Courtney M in the triple jump, and James A and Bryce H in the pole vault. In addition to these PRs there were many athletes who tried new events that established a new mark to improve upon. We learned Thursday night that we have a lot of work yet left to do to meet our season goals. Lets put in the effort over the next couple weeks so we can end the season on a high note.

Many athletes will have an opportunity to practice this Saturday morning 8:00 - 10:00am or High Jumpers/Throwers 9:00 - 11:00am.

Dual with LaFollette

Brrrrr.....it wouldn't be outdoor track and field in Wisconsin without a track meet in 30 degree weather. Hopefully we got it out of the way for the season and the weather will cooperate with us for the rest of the season. It was fun to see everyone have a chance to compete finally. Many athletes have been working hard over the last 6 weeks and it was nice to see it come to fruition with PRs at their first meet of the season. We look for big improvements out of all of our athletes, especially because the conditions were not ideal. Dual meets are used for workouts, try new events, and prepare for larger invitationals.

The performance of the meet goes to Corinne F who set a NEW SCHOOL RECORD in the discus with a throw of 143' 8" beating the old school record by 12 feet!!!! What a great start to the outdoor season :) We had event winners in McKenna G in the 100 dash, 4 x 100 relay, Anna H in the high jump, and Corinne F in discus on the girls side and Daurice F in the 110 Hurdles, Rob S in the Shot Put, Daurice F in the 300 hurdles, Rob S in the Discus, and Blake T-J in pole vault. LaFollette won the girls dual 98 - 39 and the boys dual 90 - 53 but we closed the gap on many of their competitors in just the week - two weeks time that we have seen and competed against them.

This time of year is getting busy...we need to take care of grades, make up school work for miss time at meets, take care of your body (GET SLEEP), and lets be ready to go out and compete every meet, every practice, every day.

TFA Championships @ UW-Whitewater

The Spartans closed out their 2012 indoor season with the TFA Championships in the Kachel Fieldhouse on the UW-Whitewater campus. Many of our athletes were missing in action due to Spring Break but the athletes who were at the meet performed well making great strides as we prepare for the outdoor season. It was great to see the amazing progress achieved by the athletes at practice this week and it will pay off throughout the rest of the season. The performance of the meet goes to McKenna G as she reached the final of the 55 meter dash against some of the best sprinters in the state. McKenna ran a PR of 7.59 on the day and finished 7th in the finals with a time of 7.67. The PR of the day goes to Bryce H in the 1600 meter run. Bryce improved his 1600 time to 4:57.32 dropping over 13 seconds off his performance from just a week earlier. Bryce's work this week on the track at practice paid off in a big way at this weekend's meet. The boys saw PRs by Nick M in the 400 (54.70), Tyler M in the 1600 (4:51.48), Sam B in the 800 (2:11.13) and a great season opener for Cam N. in the shot put (40' 3.5"). On the girls side Margot W. made an excellent debut for the Spartans in the 55 hurdles (10.70) and the 4 x 200 team of Phibi M, Caroline S, Mariah OF, and McKenna G ran a nice time of 1:59.08.

West Relays @ UW-Madison SHELL

A few dedicated Memorial boys competed this Saturday at both Class B and Class A meets at the Madison West Relays hosted at the UW-Madison SHELL. It was a great introduction to the season for many athletes. As coaches we are excited as we get more and more athletes competing. We are just over a week away from having all athletes have their first competition. Then the season really takes off with the outdoor season. We are reaching the midseason point already (yeah I know that is crazy...but JV athletes hit the midseason mark this week and Varsity athletes hit it next week) the work we have done already will make the rest of the season. Take advantage of every day to improve yourself so that you are ready for big performances at the end of the season.

The performance of the meet on Saturday was turned in by Daurice F in the 55 meter hurdles. Daurice raced to a 2nd place finish in a FAT time of 7.88. His time ranks him as the 5th best time all season by male athletes in Wisconsin. Rob S. through a team season best in the Shot Put with a throw of 44' 1.25" and our 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 teams showed marked improvement. The team of Kaayvon G, Alex K, Josh P, and Micah P ran a time of 3:40. 53 and the team of Tyler M, Sam B, Josh P, and Andy R ran a time of 8:41.24. Indoor City Championships - Boys 4th & Girls 3rd

The 2012 Indoor City Championships took place at the UW-Madison SHELL on Saturday. The boys and girls varsity teams competed against Madison East, Edgewood, LaFollette, and West for city bragging rights. Both squads were still missing some important role players that will contribute to the team during the outdoor season. But coaches were very pleased with all the athletes that competed on Saturday and the efforts that were put forth in all events. Memorial had three CITY CHAMPIONS for indoors...Daurice F. ran a 7.8 hand time for 55 hurdles, McKenna G ran a 7.3 hand time for the 55 dash, and Blake T-J vaulted 11' 0" in the pole vault. We had many athletes who were close to winning championships and others who saw what it would take to be outdoor champions. The work our team does at practice over the next 7 weeks will determine how many city champions we can have outdoor. We need to continue to work hard in the weight room, on the track, and in the classroom as we move forward this season.

Athletes who finished in the top 5 individually or top 4 for relays scored points in the team competition. The girls scored in 8 events and the boys scored in 10 events. On the girls side McKenna G was 2nd in the 200 dash in 28.3, Hannah L was 2nd in the 400 dash in 1:03.3, the 4x200 Relay of Anna H, Mariah O-F, Caroline S, and Skylah G combined for 3rd place, the 4x400 Relay of Hannah L, Mariah O-F, Amelia F, and Sara P combined for 4th place, Corinne F was 2nd in the Shot Put with a throw of 33' 8.5", Jessi F was 3rd in the Shot Put with a throw of 31' 6.75", Anna H jumped 4' 6" for 3rd in the high jump, and Mariah O-F jumped 4' 4" for 4th in the high jump, and Phibi Miller finished 5th in the long jump with a leap of 14' 7.5". On the boys side Alex K ran 6.8 in 55 dash for 4th place, Javaughn S ran 6.9 in the 55 dash for 5th place, Chris T. was 5th in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.7, Alex K. was 4th in the 200 dash with a 24.5, Nick M ran 55.1 in the 400 dash for 4th place, Ben A ran 2:03.4 for 3rd place in the 800 run, Jordan B finished 5th in the 1600 run in 4:51.3, Jonah W. was 5th in the 3200 run in 10:08.5, the 4x400 Relay of Robbie E, Josh P, Daurice F, and Ben A. finished 2nd with a time of 3:43.0, Chris T. jumped 19' 2" to take 3rd in the long jump, and Zach O went 8' 0" in the pole vault for 4th place. It was great to see so many athletes scoring and many young and new faces who have plenty of room for improvement.

This is the last week of classes for 3rd quarter...lets buckle down in the classroom, communicate with our teachers, and make sure we have good grades for 3rd quarter. Additionally, next week school will be on Spring Break...communicate with your coaches on what days you will be at practice and what you should do for the days you will miss practice. We can't afford to lose all the hard work we have already put into the season. Athletes MUST be at practice on Monday April 9th to compete in our Dual Meet vs. LaFollette on Tuesday April 10th (this meet is for boys/girls varsity and junior varisty...ALL athletes).

Nelson/Daniels Invitational @ Whitewater

The 2012 track and field season is off and running...the boys and girls team began their season with a varsity competition inside the Kachel Fieldhouse at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. The Spartans introduced many new athletes to the sport of track and field and some of our old athletes went out and ran/threw/jumped at or better than then their PRs (personal records) from the end of last season. All the athletes competed at a very high level and impressed the coaching staff across the board.

Micah P. made the finals of the triple jump and finished 9th with a jump of 39-00.50, Marissa H finished in a tie for 7th in the high jump with a height of 4' 10", Corrine F and Jessi F both made the finals of Shot Put throwing 31 - 11.00 and 31 - 6.50 for 7th/8th respectively, Daurice F qualified 8th for the 55 Hurdle Finals but improved his time to a 8.09 to finish 3rd in the Hurdles, McKenna G qualified for the 55 Dash Finals and finished 6th with a 7.68 time, and many athletes who had 9th, 10th, and 11th places just missing out on scoring points for the team.

This meet was a great starting point for the season. We look forward to adding more people to the competition roster and developing a well-rounded line-up for every meet. Keep up the great work at practice, take care of your grades at school, and expect big things for the rest of the season.
