West Relays @ UW Shell

While the girls team enjoyed a well deserved weekend of rest from competition the boys team sent two squads to compete at the Madison West Relays hosted at UW Shell on Saturday. The morning session saw some of our junior varsity athletes competing against varsity kids from "small" schools and the evening session saw our varsity athletes competing against the "large" schools competition. The meet saw many quality individual performances as some jv kids saw their first action of the season and the varsity kids took on some of the top performers of the state. As a coaching staff we continue to remind the athletes we are looking for progression and improvement. We are still working hard in practice and don't expect our best performances until later in the season. Meets at this time of year help us learn about what we need to improve and give us an opportunity to become better competitors. As we enter the last week of the indoor season and prepare for our first outdoor meets it is an important reminder that we take care of our grades, attendance, health, body, and everything to be ready to compete. As the outdoor season starts on Tuesday April 9th we will be half way through our training season but in full force for our competition season. There is no competition without being eligible & healthy so lets use this next week to make sure we are ready to compete outdoors.

The morning session saw many new faces to JMM track & field and allowed a lot of young runners to have an opportunity to compete at the varsity level. These kids are the future of the program and we hope they learned from their experiences and work on the things they need to improve so they can come back to this meet next season and compete in the afternoon session. The performance of the morning goes to Jake R in the 3200m run. Jake missed scoring points at the varsity meet by .02 but did set a PR by nearly a minute running 10:49.24. Other PR's in the morning included Ty S in the 55 hurdles, Bryce H in the 800m run, and Price R in the shot put. Continue to improve every day, take on the challenges your coaches provide you, and look towards the future.

The afternoon session was highlighted by scoring performances in the 55m dash, 3200m run, and 4x800m relay. Jester W improved his 55m time to 6.38 and placed 1st in this event. Jonah W set a new PR in the 3200m run with a time of 9:38.27 for 2nd place. Also, the 4x800 relay team of Sam B, Jonah W, Tyler M, and Josh P combined for a 3rd place finish and season best time of 8:27.19. These athletes continued to lead the team this weekend with outstanding performances. Additionally we had PRs set by Nick M in the 55 hurdles, Connor GT in the 1600m run, and Sean B in the shot put. In the relays, Jake A, Josh B, RaQuan C & Jester W combined for our season best in the 4x100 while Nick M, Micah P, Tyler M, and Josh P combined for our season best in the 4x400. Our team continues to make improvements in all areas of competition and this will lead us to be a stronger team by season's end.

City Championships @ UW Shell - Boys & Girls 2nd Place

What better way to start spring break then with an indoor track meet? The Madison Memorial boys and girls track and field teams took on the city schools for the indoor championships held at the Shell on UW-Madison campus. There were many great performances by both squads which led the girls to 76 points and a 2nd place finish behind West's 86 points and the boys team to 82 points for a 2nd place finish behind LaFollette's 96 points. This is very early in the season for a championship meet and is more of a learning experience then a "show us your best" type meet. That being said, JMM provided many exciting moments for this early in the season crowning TEN City Champions. Individuals score points at this meet with top five finishes: the girls had 12 different athletes score and scored in EVERY event; the boys had 13 different athletes score and scored in EVERY individual event. As nice as it was to see 10 city champions today, as coaches we know that we can increase this number as we move towards the outdoor season. It is important that we continue to work hard every day at practice and focus our attention towards bigger things at the end of the season. Trust and believe in your coaches and push your teammates every day to work their hardest...we have many goals yet to reach.

The boys team was led by Daurice F who set a new indoor city record with his victory in the 55 hurdles of 7.66, a new indoor city record and SCHOOL RECORD long jump of 23' 3.5", and was a member of the city champion 4x400 team. Jester W won the 55m dash in 6.44 and added a second in the 200m dash with a time of 23.38. Tyler M won the 3200m run, the longest race of the day in the smallest margin of victory, with an excellent kick to win by .01 running a 10:35.10. The 4x400 relay team of James A, Daurice F, Josh P, and Nick M came from behind to win a city championship in 3:36.34. Josh P also scored points in the 400m dash and 800m run. While Nick M also scored points in the 55 hurdles and 400m dash. Jonah W provided a second place finish with his 4:26.29 in the 1600. Jeremy G took second in the shot put with a throw of 44' 2.25" and his throwing teammate Ryan B tossed the shot 42' 3" for third place. Raquan C placed 3rd in the 55m dash and Jake A placed 5th, giving the boys team 3 sprinters scoring in the 55m dash. Micah P jumped 19' 9" in the long jump for 4th, Zach O cleared 7' 0" in the pole vault for 4th place, and Jared B cleared 5' 4" in the high jump for 5th place. This was a great meet across the board showing nice depth and diversity for track & field this season.

The girls team was led by Marissa H and Kayla G as Marissa won the 55m dash in 7.66, the 200m dash in 27.83, and finished 2nd to her teammate in the high jump with a clearance of 4'8" while Kayla G won the high jump in 4'8", the pole vault in 8' 3", and was a member of the 4th place 4x100 relay with Phibi M, Skyylah G, and Marcella V. Corrine F added a 1st place in the shot put with a throw of 34' 8". Sienna C provided a 2nd place finish in the 3200m run with a time of 12:24.35. Rachel B ran a 7.92 for 3rd in the 55m dash and 28.87 in the 200m dash for 4th place. Phibi M took 3rd in the 55m hurdles with a 10.02. Freshmen Sydney S (1:08.21) and Sarah H (1:08.54) went 4th and 5th in the 400m run. While Meghan S went 4th in the 800m run (2:36.87) and Sara N was 5th in the 1600m run (5:52.96). In the field events Sarah H went 4' 4" for 4th in the high jump, Robyn B went 14' 5" in the long jump for 5th, and Claire F threw 30' 3.5" for 5th in the shot put. The girls team welcomed back some familiar faces at this meet and saw many new faces, including freshman, stepping up and ready to score points.

Nelson-Daniels Invitational @ UW-Whitewater

The early spring Wisconsin weather has not been very cooperative for the Madison Memorial boys and girls track team but the start of competition knows no waiting. So, after two weeks of intense practice with close to 200 track & field athletes, a handful of varsity athletes traveled to the Kachel Field House at UW-Whitewater. This group competed against some of the best teams from Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Our very own Daurice F was named athlete of the meet for boys competitors with his wins in the 55 hurdles (7.61) and long jump (21' 2.5") along with being a member of the 10th place 4x4 relay team (including Courtney M, Tyler M, & Josh P). On the girls side we had an event champion in Corinne F with a PR throw of 36' 9" in the shot put. Also scoring points on the boys side was Josh P with 5th place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:03.3. Today's meet brought the first competition experience for many athletes and a number of PR's for returning athletes. Notable performances on the day include 7.15 by freshman Jake A in the 55 dash, a 10.09 by Mariah O-F in the 55 hurdles, a 9th place finish by Jonah W with a PR of 2:06.21 in the 800, Sienna C running a 1600 in 5:58.0 for her first track race, Christian M clearing 5' 6" in his first ever high jump competition, 11th place finishes by Bryce H in the boys and Sara N in the girls 3200, Jessi F in the shot put, and the boys 4x8 of Brad G, Ben B, Jonah W, & Jake R. A compliment to Jeremy G who was the first athlete to compete in the new boys track uniforms and threw a PR of 38' 00.25" in shot put competition. Today was a great starting point for the season. We hope to see continued improvement from the athletes who competed today and look forward to adding more athletes to the mix as we progress into the season. It is important that we put in the work now at practice and in the classroom so we can compete at our best later in the season.
