Verona Dual @ Verona HS

The heat arrived Tuesday night (it will be gone by Thursday...highs around 50) and made it feel like summer for one day. The wind was brisk but the storms stayed away, so all in all it was a nice day for a track & field meet. The girls extended their undefeated season in duals with their 74 to 72 win over Verona. The boys experienced their first loss of the season going down to Verona 92 to 54. Again, dual meets are an opportunity to improve and experience new things. We will see Verona again in two weeks at the Big Eight Conference meet and both teams will be ready to showcase their best on that night. JV kids are now down to their last two weeks...lets be ready to end on a high note.

Earning victories on the girls side tonight: 4x8 relay of Sara N, Kelsey K, Kyra H, and Meghan S in 10:53.23, Marissa H in the 100m dash (13.14), 200m dash (26.83), and 400m dash (1:02.03), Sienna C in the 1600m run (5:40.61), Sara N in the 3200m run (12:55.15), Corinne F in the discus (127' 4") and the 4x4 relay of Sydney S, Katie H, Gabrielle G, and Mariah OF in 4:36.78.

Earning victories on the boys side tonight: 4x8 relay of Jonah W, Calder B, Connor GT, and Bryce H in 9:12.02, Daurice F in 110m hurdles (15.07), 300m hurdles (39.97), and long jump (19' 6 1/2"), Jared B in the 100m dash (11.57), Josh P in the 400m dash (53.12), Courtney M in the 200m dash (24.67), and James A in the 3200 m run (10:47.90).

Be prepared for everything that Wisconsin weather will throw at us over the next couple weeks. Take care of your business at the track and away from it, so we are able to perform at our best. Be proactive with your teachers to get your homework/schoolwork done so we don't get behind because of early release time. This is the time of year that should be fun...let's make it so!

Baraboo Relays @ Baraboo HS

A busy week came to a conclusion Friday evening as the Madison Memorial boys and girls track & field teams competed at the 2013 Baraboo Relays. Spring weather has arrived (and we hopes stays but keep those hats and gloves handy just in case...it is Wisconsin after all) and Friday night provided a wonderful opportunity for our varsity squads to showcase their combination of talent and depth at a relay meet. The 100m dash and 3200m run were competed individually as all other events were competed as a team. Athletes ran relays, combined for shuttles, or added up their heights/distances to take their places at the Baraboo Relays. This meet showed both the boys and girls teams the importance of every point at a track & field meet as after 16 events competed the boys team took 1st place by just 3 points and girls team missed 1st place by a mere 1 point. Both teams competed at a high level and have begun to raise the bar for the end of the season. We will see many of these teams again at City, Conference, and Regionals and we saw today how well we can match up against some good teams. We look forward to seeing the team continue to shine in the coming weeks.

On the boys side we scored 97 points to outdistance Madison LaFollette's 94 points. Earning victories on Friday night were: Jester W. in the 100m dash (setting a new meet record), the High Hurdle Shuttle of Nick M, Micah P, & Daurice F (setting a new meet record), the Sprint Medley Relay of Daurice F, Jester W, Nick M, & Josh P, and the Long Jump team of Micah P, Jester W, and Daurice F (setting a new meet record). Earning second place finishes included the 4x200m relay of Jake A, Jared B, Ben I, & Micah P, the Distance Medley Relay of Josh B, Tyler M, James A, & Jonah W, the High Jump team of Micah P, Jared B, & Curtis C, and the 4x400m relay of Nick M, Josh P, Jester W, & Daurice F. Rounding out top 3 finishes for the boys were the 4x800m relay of Josh P, John H, Jonah W, & Tyler M and the Discus team of Sean B, Ryan B, & Zach D. Many PR's by individuals helped these relays and teams perform at their best.

On the girls side we scored 104 points only to be outscored by Beaver Dam's 105 points. Top place finishes went to: the High Jump team of Marissa H, Sydney S, & Mariah O-F, the High Hurdle Shuttle of Mariah O-F, Phibi M, & Natalie S, the 4x200m Relay of Sydney S, Emma Cate M, Marissa H, & Rachel B, and the 4x100m Relay of Allison H, Marcella V, Rachel B, & Marrisa H. Taking home silver medals were: Marissa H in the 100m dash, the Sprint Medley Relay, and the Discus team. Also getting medals were: the 4x800m relay of Sara N, Gabrielle G, Sienna C, & Meghan S, Sienna C in the 3200m run, and the Throwers Shuttle of Claire F, Corinne F, & Caroline R.  When a meet is decided by one point there are many ifs and buts that can be discussed but instead of dwelling on this one point we will use it as motivation to make sure we don't allow it to be this close at meets in the coming weeks.

Our busy schedule continues and the countdown to Conference is only 2 1/2 weeks away. Now is the time of year to get rest, take care of your body, and set huge PRs. We are performing at a very high level as a team and this will continue if every individual does their part to be ready to compete every meet. Make sure we are going to class, staying ahead of homework, and being proactive to avoid unnecessary distractions away from the track and field. Let's end the season on a high note and meet the team goals we set after our indoor season.

JV Big 8 Invitational @ Verona HS

Thursday night finally brought some nice track & field weather and many of the Madison Memorial JV athletes took advantage at the rescheduled Big 8 JV Invitational. The event is not scored but we do record times, distances, and heights. The boys and girls teams saw personal bests by 35 athletes! The hard work from practice and the weight room is showing up in competition. Some athletes earned the right to compete at the varsity level with their performances from Thursday night. The competition between teammates for varsity spots will make all the athletes better. We need to continue to be at the top of our game as many athletes will compete 2 - 3 per week in the next two weeks as we lead up to the city and conference championships. Keep improving, keep striving for your best, keep up the good work.

A big shout out of THANKS to all the JMM athletes who helped out working the meet Thursday night...we did a great job hosting this meet (and we even got the hurdles on and off the track well :)!

Beloit Dual @ Mansfield

The rain and snow held off but the temperatures took a nose dive towards winter instead of spring. The boys & girls of the Madison Memorial Track & Field team just bundled up and went to work taking care of business against their opponent Tuesday night. This is the time of year when our bodies ache, our muscles are sore, and we are all on the verge of injury. It is important that we get SLEEP, that we ICE and STRETCH, and that we drink WATER. After next week, we begin championship season and things will get easier, times will get faster, distances will become farther, and heights will get higher BUT we need to be healthy to compete in these meets. It is only 3 weeks until conference!!!! It doesn't feel like it because of the weather but it will be here soon...stay positive, dream of sunny track & field meets, and be ready to compete at your best.

Tuesday night saw the boys and girls teams extend their dual meet winning streaks. We use these meets as workouts and stepping stones but it never hurts to enjoy a victory. The girls scored 93 points to Beloit Memorial's 43 points and the boys totaled 97 points to Beloit Memorial's 49 points. There is still room for improvement but many things went well tonight. Keep up the good work.

Earning victories on the girls side were: Natalie S in the 100m hurdles (17.75), Marissa H in the 100m dash (13.03), 200m dash (27.24) and high jump (4' 8"), Robyn B in the Long Jump (13' 11"), Sienna C in the 1600m run (5:39.96), Gabrielle G in the 300m hurdles (54.48), Sara N in the 800m run (2:38.0), Samantha G in the 3200m run (13:49.0), Corinne F in the discus (137' 1") and the 4x400m relay (4:31.48).
On the boys side it was: The 4x800m relay (9:44.0), Zach O in the pole vault (7'0"), Jason W in the 100m dash (11.57), Micah P in the triple jump (41' 9") and long jump (20' 5"), James A in the 1600m run (4:50.53), Jester W in the 400m dash (54.68), Nick M in the 300m hurdles (42.04), Jared B in the high jump (5' 4"), Bryce H in the 800m run (2:16.41), Ryan B in the discus (127' 8"), Jeremy G in the shot put (42' 8 1/2") and the 4x400m relay team.

We encourage kids to keep up the great work in the classroom, at practice, and in the meets. This is the time of year that these things will start paying off. It is a busy time of year so please make sure you communicate with the coaches and we are ready to compete. Let's finish the next three weeks on a high note and send our varsity kids into the WIAA run performing at our best.

Watertown Invitational @ Watertown High School

The rain and snow finally gave way to sunshine and although the temperatures may have not quite warmed yet the feeling of spring was present at this Saturday's Watertown Invitational. With the change of date from Friday to Saturday the meet saw a drop in competing teams but still had some nice competition. The field events were hosted indoors (no discus) due to wet conditions while the running events were competed outdoors. It was nice to compete against multiple teams, have FAT timing, and earn some hardware for our competition. The boys team accumulated 116 points for third place and the girls team scored 74 points for fifth place. It was nice to see both teams competitive for scoring points and teammates encouraging each us as a team effort.

The performance of the day goes to Jester W as he won the 100m dash (10.78), 200m dash (22.83), and was a member of the 2nd place 4x400m relay. Jester's time of 10.78 (FAT) in the 100m dash set a new SCHOOL RECORD breaking the old mark of 10.8 (hand time). Adding another victory was Jonah W in the 3200m run (9:52.83). Micah P wrapped up a busy days with three 2nd place finishes in the 110m hurdles (16.20), Long Jump (19' 4.5"), and Triple Jump(41' 1.5"). The 4x800 team of Sam B, John H, Jake R, and Tyler M ran 8:44.88 for 2nd place and the 4x400 team of Nick M, Tyler M, Jester W, and Josh P ran 3:32.89 for 2nd place. Nick M added a second in the 300m hurdles (41.77) and a fourth place in 110m hurdles(16.79). Rounding out the top three finishers was Bryce H in the 3200m run (10:20.69). Others scoring points for the boys team included: Courtney M 4th in the 400m, Tyler M 5th and James A 7th in the 800, Josh P 5th and Connor GT 7th in the 1600, 4x100m relay 4th, and Jeremy G 4th in the shot put.

On the girls side Sienna C and Corinne F secured victories in their individual events. Sienna C ran 11:58.65 to win the 3200m run and Corinn F threw 35' 4.25" to win the shot put. Additionally, Marissa H ran a 13.14 to take a runner up finish in the 100m dash. Rounding out the top 3 finishes for the girls was 4x200 running in 1:52.71. Scoring points with top eight finishes included: Sarah H 8th in the 200, Samantha G 6th in the 1600, Sara N 4th in the 3200, Mariah OF 6th and Phibi M 7th in the 100m hurdles, Mariah OF 4th and Gabrielle G 7th in the 300m hurdles, 4x100m and 4x400m relay in 6th place, Marissa H 4th and Sydney S 5th in the high jump, and Christina M 5th in the shot put.

The weeks become busy with competitions, important workouts/lifts, busy schedules, and improved performances. Listen to your coaches, trust their plans, and give your best effort. Everyone will have a chance to improve every week, so take advantage of your opportunities. There is no better time then the present to start competing at your best.

Middleton Dual @ Middleton HS

Thursday night the Madison Memorial track & field team braved the elements to take part in our second dual of the outdoor season. We are becoming used to practicing and competing in the rain and wind. As coaches we loved seeing the competitive fire in many of the athletes who competed in the not so ideal weather conditions. This competitiveness and hard work will pay off once the weather turns nice (or should we say IF the weather turns nice). For the second straight dual meet this season the girls and boys teams were victorious. The girls scored 65 to Middleton's 62 points and the boys scored 70 to Middleton's 57 points. These meets give the coaches a nice picture into our abilities for the rest of the season and prepare us to compete our best at the invitationals and championship meets that lie ahead on the schedule. The conference championships is less then 4 weeks away...will you be ready to run your best?

Madison Memorial took 1st place in these events on Thursday night:
GIRLS- 4x800 in 10:53.6 (Sara N, Sienna C, Kelsey K, Meghan S), 100m dash by Sarah H in 13.7, 300m hurdles by Mariah O-F in 51.3, 200m dash by Sydney S in 29.8, 4x400 in 4:36.5 (Mariah O-F, Sydney S, Sarah H, Emma Cate M.), Triple Jump by Danni S in 29' 10", and Shot Put by Corinne F in 32' 5"
BOYS- 110m hurldes by Daurice F in 14.7, 100m dash by Jester W in 10.9, 1600m run by Tyler M in 4:53.0, 4x100 in 47.8 (Jake A, Josh B, Ben I, RaQuan C), 300m hurdles by Daurice F in 41.1, 200m dash by Jester W in 23.4, 3200m run by Hans H in 11:05.3, Long Jump by Daurice F in 20' 11", Triple Jump by Micah P in 41' 4", and Shot Put by Zach D in 38' 5"

We appreciate everyone's patience and willingness to make things work as we continue to work towards our goals even against the long odds mother nature has thrown at us. Stay positive, support each other, and know faster times, longer distances, and higher heights are just on the horizon. Keep reaching for your goals and we will have a great end of the season (and maybe even a sunny end of the season)

West Dual @ Mansfield

Mother Nature tried to interrupt the start of our outdoor season again but the Madison Memorial Track & Field athletes persevered through rain and cold to officially start the 2013 outdoor season. Tonight's dual was the first competition for many jv athletes and despite the weather there were many great performances by varsity and jv athletes alike. Today is just a starting point and a place to build from and improve upon. Everyone will be back out competing on Thursday or Friday and we look forwarded to marked improvement from the entire team.

In the girls competition, Madison Memorial scored 79 points to Madison West's 67 points to win the first dual of the season. The girls were led by victories from: Marissa H (13.17) in the 100m dash and (4' 8") in the high jump, Marcella V (13' 5") in the long jump,  Danni S (28' 9") in the triple jump, the 4x100m relay (54.80) of Robin B, Rachel B, Marcella V, and Marissa H, Corinne F (132' 6") in the discus and (35' 11 3/4") in the shot put, and Kayla G (7' 6") in the pole vault. The top three individuals in dual meets score points (5-3-1) and it was our depth that helped win this dual meet.

In the boys competition, Madison Memorial scored 75 points to Madison West's 71 points making it a clean sweep. The boys got victories from: 4x800m relay (9:09.43) of Tyler M, James A, Calder B, and Benton DD, Micah P (41' 6") in triple jump and (19' 2") in long jump, Daurice F (15.27) in 110m hurdles, Jared B (11.58) in 100m dash, Nick M (41.75) in the 300m hurdles, and Ryan B (39' 10") in shot put. The boys team only won seven of the eighteen events competed but was able to score in EVERY individual event. This talent across all event areas is what led to the victory for the boys today.

It is important that we are able to build off this first outdoor meet and improve the rest of the season. We can only do this by continuing to work hard at practice, getting plenty of rest at night, taking care of our bodies at home, and staying eligible in the classroom. Both boys and girls teams can accomplish big things this season if we continue to make strides and perform at our best in the coming months.

TFA @ UW-Whitewater Kachel Fieldhouse

The 2013 indoor season came to a close on Saturday with the TFA Indoor State Championships held in the Kachel Fieldhouse at UW-Whitewater. This meet is known as the Indoor State Championships unofficially because it draws so many teams from across the state with a wide array of talent. It is not really a state meet because there are still so many talented athletes who do not come to this meet and so many events that are not competed. The competition was stiff in both the morning girls session and evening boys session. Our athletes had great opportunities to see what it takes to keep on the highest level at high school athletics in Wisconsin. As coaches we hope everyone uses this meet for motivation as we change gear and move into the outdoor season. There are 5 more weeks until our outdoor Conference Meet and 7 more weeks to prepare for the WIAA State Championships.

During the morning session the girls team finished in 21st out of about 55 total teams. Corinne F improved her personal best in the Shot Put to 38' 9" to place 3rd in the meet. Marissa H ran 7.69 in the 55m dash to make Semi-Finals and then improved to 7.68 for 15th, she also cleared 4' 10" in the high jump to tie for 17th place. Kayla G made 7' 6" in the pole vault and just missed at 8' 6" she finished in 20th place on the day. Personal bests were turned in by Claire F and Christina M in the shot put, Meghan S in the 1600m run, and Sienna C in the 800m run. This group of girls looks to lead us into the outdoor season. We look forward to some spirited competition among teammates for these coveted varsity slots.

During the evening session the boys team collected 26 points good enough for 3rd place out of about 52 total teams. The boys team was lead by Jester W and Daurice F as Jester placed 1st in the 55m dash in 6.39, Daurice took 2nd in the 55m hurdles in a new PR of 7.51 and 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 21' 6.5", and they joined forces with Nick M and Jared B in the 4x200 relay to run 1:35.03 and place 10th. Jonah W just missed scoring points in the 1600m run with his 9th place finish in 4:31.01 and Josh Peters took 14th with his 2:02.62 in the 800m run. Personal bests on the boys side we reached by Jared B in the 55m dash, Tyler M in the 1600m run and  Sam B in the 800m run. There were many positives that came from today's meet and many more things that we learned we can improve. Use the TFA meet as a stepping stone for what we want to accomplish at the end of the season. Keep up the hard work and things will fall into place at the end of the year.
