City Championships - Girls Champions & Boys Runner Ups

The Madison Memorial Spartans were greeted by a warm rain Tuesday night at the Madison City Championships hosted by Madison Memorial but they were undeterred in their effort to put out their best performances for the start of the championship season. The girls were able to defend their outdoor city championship title and complete their sweep of both indoor & outdoor city championships by having a well rounded team effort. On the boys side the Spartans took a solid runner up place behind Madison LaFollette who they had beat at the indoor championships. For both teams they look to get a little bit healthier as they run their last tune ups this weekend and then head into the Conference & WIAA championship series. This is the time of year that we want to get some extra sleep and make sure we are healthy to take advantage of all the hard work leading up to these meets and performance at our bests to complete the season. It is GO TIME!

Baraboo Relays

Friday night the Madison Memorial Track & Field team headed to Baraboo, WI to compete in the 50th Anniversary Baraboo Relays. This meet is set up to show a team's depth in addition to their top level talent. Athletes compete together in relay events to score points for their teams ranging from medley relays to field events that together total heights/lengths for one total. It is a fun, different way to compete and the Spartan athletes had fun again this year (eating at the Pizza Ranch never hurts :). The girls team accumulated 112 points to earn 1st place while the boys team scored 83 points to finish in 4th place. It was a great all around effort by the girls team to take home the title!

Snow & 4x400 under the lights...THIS is Wisconsin Track & Field

As expected in Wisconsin, mother nature threw a curve ball at the Madison Memorial Track & Field teams as they headed to Sun Prairie Tuesday night to take on Big 8 foes Sun Prairie & Verona. The athletes valiantly went out in the 30 degree weather, strong winds, and performed at their best. As a track athlete in Wisconsin you need to expect that you will compete in 30 degree weather up to 90 degree weather, you will compete in snow, rain, & occasionally sunshine, you'll have meets delayed due to thunderstorms, tornado warnings, timing malfunctions, and everything you can think of and at the end of the day, every athlete in Wisconsin goes through it and those that are ready to handle it the best are the ones who succeed. Tuesday was a great learning experience for all athletes. It is Wisconsin, the weather will change...will you be ready? On Tuesday the boys & girls both fell to Sun Prairie & Verona. This meet is just a stepping stone towards the Big 8 Conference meets at the end of the season and hopefully each athlete has someone from this meet that they hope to beat in a month when we see these teams again.

Triple Dual @ Middleton w/ Janesville Craig

Thursday night continued the Big 8 dual meet schedule and gave the JMM Track & Field athletes another opportunity to jump higher/farther, throw father, and run faster. Every day is an opportunity to improve and if Thursday was not that day for you....next week may be that opportunity. It is a busy time of the season and will be important that all athletes stay caught up on class work, get plenty of rest, and take care of their bodies. Thursday night both the boys & girls teams took down Janesville Craig but fell to Middleton. Up next for JMM is Verona and Sun Prairie and then we head back to some invite competitions. Keep improving and working hard less than a month left in the season until the Big 8 Conference meets.

Triple Dual vs Beloit & Janesville Parker

Tuesday night finally saw the long awaited start to the 2015 outdoor track & field campaign for the JMM Boys & Girls Track & Field teams. All athletes took to competition against Big 8 foes Beloit Memorial and Janesville Parker. For some athletes it was the first competition of the season while other continued to fine tune their race tactics for bigger meets yet to come. Many personal bests were set as the athletes took advantage of the beautiful early April weather. A reminder to all parents and athletes that we compete in Wisconsin and although the weather was nice Tuesday night we will still have cold weather, rain, and maybe even snow yet this season....so bring clothes to every meet for ALL weather conditions (& boy does it get colder when the sun goes down). In dual meet results the girls team fell to Beloit 73 to 59 and also loss to Parker 80 to 56. For the boys they beat Beloit 99 to 42 but loss to Parker 88 to 58. More important than dual meet wins are the PRs and improvements that we saw from many athletes. It is vital that each athlete learns from their performances and improves upon them from meet to meet, week to week, and as the season continues. Our big meet goals are still a month away and these dual meets are just stepping stones to performing well at the end of the season.

Girls TFA & Boys West Relays

On Saturday the Madison Memorial track & field team split its squad sending a handful of girls to UW-Whitewater to compete in the TFA meet while the boys stayed in Madison to compete in the Madison West Relays meet at the Shell. For both teams this was their last indoor competition as both athletes and coaches look forward to the outdoor season beginning next week. The season is going to get very busy, very fast and the next six weeks are going to buzz by. It is time for ALL kids to show what they are made of and put in their hard work daily to get the most of this season. BE READY!

The TFA meet has gone through many transformations over the years moving from Madison to Whitewater and changing weekends from year to year. The meet was once widely known as the indoor state meet due to the wide variety of high quality competition at the meet. While some teams are now missing from this meet the competition level is still very high. Shot putter Holly H scored points with a PR heave of 37' 4.5" which placed her 7th at the meet and 9th on the D1 state honor roll. 55m Hurdler Phibi M set a PR in prelims to qualify for semis and then improved her PR again to 9.42 to finish 14th overall. Soph Julana DW also set a new PR in the 55m dash finishing in 7.79. It was a nice finish to the indoor season for the girls and everyone got to see some great competition.

The boys headed to the West Relays meet on Saturday and were permitted to competing athletes in both the "B" session which was the "small" schools in the morning and the "A" session which was the "large" schools in the evening. It was a busy and eventful day for the boys all day long. During the morning session, freshman Lance D scored in the 400m dash running a 56.67. While PR's were set by Dondreon C in the 55m dash (7.02), Cortez T in the 55m hurdles (9.93), and Jared G in the 3200m run (11:36.51). In the afternoon session, the team was led by a Jezell T who leaped a new PR in the long jump to win the event. His jump of 22' .5" moves him into 3rd on the state honor roll. Jake A placed 4th individually in the 200m dash with a time of 23.65 and combined with Jezell, Ean M, and Kaydee S to place 4th in the 4 x 200 with a time of 1:35.39. The 4 x 100 relay team of Jake A, Hunter P, Ean M, & Jezell T placed 8th with a time of 46.09. Some nice PRs were Kaydee S in the 55m dash (6.91), Casey GT in the 1600m run (5:04.78), and Zach H in the 800m run (2:08.16). The boys performed great at both sessions and now turn their attention to the the outdoors.
