Dual vs Sun Prairie @ Mansfield

Tuesday night's dual was wet but the athlete's who mentally got past the fact it was raining out enjoyed a beautiful night of track & field with decent temperature and little wind. It was great to see so many people step up and compete as there were over 70 PRs set by JMM athletes at the dual. Unfortunately the boys lost a close dual to Sun Prairie 78 to 68 and although the girls lost 59 to 87 they scored very well against the defending conference champions. Both programs continued to improve across the board and look forward to returning to action later this week for more season highlights.

The girls were led by event champions: Phibi M in the 100m hurdles (17.2) & 300m hurdles (54.0), Sydney S in the high jump (4' 8") & triple jump (31' 5.25"), and Holly H in the discus (93' 7). Other notable performances on the night go to Marcella V taking 2nd in the 100m dash in a PR of 13.7, Meghan S placing 2nd in the 1600m run with a PR of 5:30.1, Amelia F taking 3rd in the 3200m run in a PR of 12:19.2, Kayla G clearing 9' 0" in the pole vault for 2nd place, and Holly A PRing in the discus to place 3rd with a toss of 79' 8".

Dual vs Janesville Parker @ Mansfield

The sun was out but there was still a nip in the air and the wind was brisk for Tuesday night's dual meet against Janesville Parker. The JMM boys & girls track & field teams took on Big 8 rivals in their second dual meet of the outdoor season. Athletes continue to try new events and progress is being shown by both varsity and junior varsity athletes alike. In the team battle the girls lost to Parker 83 to 63 and the boys loss in a close battle 74 to 72. Both teams were a little short handed and hope to get more athletes back as they move forward in the season. It is important for EVERYONE to take care of their bodies, get good grades in the classroom, and be at practice every day. We look forward to continuous improvement as we close out the month of April.

Spring Is Here or Is It?

The outdoor season began this week as many outdoor seasons in Wisconsin do....COLD. The Wisconsin track & field season is an up and down season that takes the high school athlete through warms & colds, sun & rain, wind & snow, and some days all of these weather events at once. The Madison Memorial track & field athletes who were in town over break took to the outdoor tracks to compete in a dual meet against Madison East and some JV athletes partook in the Big 8 JV Conference Invitational hosted by Verona. These meets were a nice opportunity to "kick the tires" and get the outdoor season started for 2014. As we continue into the coming weeks athletes will be finding their events that they excel at and hoping to improve on a regular basis throughout the outdoor competitions. AND if we are lucky we will get some nice weather to go with improving athletes to make for a great outdoor season.

Tuesday's dual meets vs East saw both the boys and girls teams victorious. The squads were led by the following athletes who finished first in their respective events earning them valuable team points in the competitions.
BOYS 1st Places - Jake A in the 100m dash (11.5) & 200m dash (23.4), Micah P in the 110m hurdles (16.1) & triple jump (40' 7"), Daurice F in the 300m hurdles (42.9) & long jump (20' 8"), Zach H in the 800m run (2:16.0), Jake R in the 1600m run (4:57.0), Bryce H in the 3200m run (10:37.0), the 4x200, 4x400, & 4x800m relays, Price R in shot put (35' 4") & discus (101' 2"), and Trevis M in high jump (5' 2").
GIRLS 1st Places - Margot W in the 100m dash (12.9) & long jump (14' 2") & triple jump, Mariah OF in the 300m hurdles (52.2), Carly H in the 800m run (2:46.0), Siena C in the 1600m run (5:45.0), the 4x200m, 4x400m, & 4x800m relays, and Christina M in the shot put (30' 7.5") & discus (99' 11").

Some highlights from Thurdays JV Invitational include Hunter P going 6' 0" in the high jump & 8'6" in the pole vault, Ean M running 11.8 in the 100m dash, Ty B and Caleb S going 2:26 in the 800m run, Ben T running 5:15.5 in the 1600m run, James H going :48.0 in the 300m hurdles, Cole W throwing 37' 1" in the shot put, Eli H throwing 105' 7" in the discus, Van T jumping 18' 9" in the long jump & 33' 9.5" in the triple jump, Holly H throwing 32' 3" in the shot put and 69' 7" in the discus, and Joan M going 30.0 in the 200m dash. West Relays B & A (BOYS) @ UW-Madison

On Saturday the boys Track & Field team represented JMM in both the Class B and Class A events at the Madison West Relays. During the morning Class B section Madison Memorial was able to enter some younger athletes and JV competitors to compete against the varsity athletes from the small schools around the state. In the afternoon session our varsity boys competed against the large school athletes from Wisconsin and Illinois. Some great competition was had across all events as the boys looked to close out their indoor season on a high note. The boys took another step to improve at all levels and look forward to getting more athletes involved in the competition for varsity spots next week at our outdoor meets. Track & field is a sport that rewards hard work, dedication, and top performances. If you aren't where you want to be this indoor season keep up the hard work and show improvement as we head outdoors.

During the morning session at West Relays the JMM boys were led by Jeremy G in the shot put who recorded a PR throw of 44' 11.25" to place 5th in the event and score our only points in the morning session. Despite not scoring points in the other events our JV athletes had many great performances led by PRs for freshman Lonnie T running 6.90 in the 55m dash, sophomore Alex A with a 56.62 in the 400m dash, junior Calder B running 2:20.70 in the 800m dash, freshman Casey GT improving his 3200m time to 11:18.30, sophomore Jezell T leaping 19' 1.5" in the long jump, and junior Drake S improving to 17' 2" in the long jump. With continued improvement I see many of these athletes making contributions not only this outdoor season but into the future too.

The afternoon session was highlighted by the performance of Daurice F in the 55m hurdles and long jump. Daurice set a new MEET RECORD and state best time of 7.49 in the 55m hurdles. Additionally he jumped 21' 5.5" to win the long jump and his jump from earlier in the season of 22' 1.5" ranks him fourth on the state honor roll. Another great performance was turned in by Micah P in the long jump as he jumped 20' 3.5" to finish in 5th place. The only other points on the day came from the 4x100m relay team of Jake A, Jason W, Jared B, and RaQuan C who finished in 8th place with a time of 46.09 improving their season best. Other PR performances on the day were turned in by sophomore Jason W (6.80) & junior Jared B (6.86) in the 55m dash, senior Micah P (8.38) in the 55m hurdles, senior Jake R (4:48.63) in the 1600m run, and sophomore Zach H (2:11.73) in the 800m run. The boys team looks forward to improving with tough workouts in the coming weeks, enjoying some warmer weather at the track, and opening the outdoor season at Lussier Stadium against Madison East.

TFA (Girls) @ UW-Whitewater

Saturday afternoon brought a close to the indoor season for the girls JMM Track & Field team as they competed at the 2014 Wisconsin TFA Championships. This meet brings in teams from around the entire state and is known as one of the most competitive meets during the entire indoor season. The girls got to go against some of the best to close out the end of the indoor season and it was a great experience for all the athletes who competed. Hopefully those at the meet learned something today from watching and competing against the best the state has to offer.

Although the team did not score any points there were multiple athletes who had season bests and personal records in today's competition. Sydney S matched her PR in the high jump leaping 5' 0" putting her in a tie for 9th place. This jump also ranks Sydney as 17th in division 1 on the state honor roll. Kayla G had another great meet in the pole vault jumping 9' 0" earning her a 10th place finish. Her PR of 9' 3" last week puts her 3" away from being on the state honor roll. Amelia F improved in her 800m run with a PR of 2:35.77. The entire girls team will return to action on April 15th when they compete against Madison East to open the outdoor season. After a successful indoor season it is time to raise our goals and set our sights high for a big outdoor season. Work hard in the classroom, at the track, and in the weight room to make sure the remainder of the season is a huge success.
