THANKS for a Great Season!
The 2014 boys and girls Track & Field season was another exciting season for Madison Memorial. The program continues to compete at a high level in all competitions we enter. To build on this season's success we need to see commitment from all our athletes to improve over the off season months. It is the responsibility of each athlete to find opportunities to improve their speed, strength, endurance, and athleticism so as to be better prepared for more success in the future. As coaches we are excited for the potential of next season and look forward to seeing each individual improve in every event.

WIAA State Championships @ UW-LaCrosse
The Madison Memorial boys & girls Track & Field teams sent five of their brightest stars to UW-LaCrosse on Friday and Saturday to represent them against the best the state had to offer in the 2014 WIAA Division 1 State Championships. The weather for Friday's morning session was beautiful but the unpredictable weather of the Coulee Region in LaCrosse brought an over five hour storm delay for Saturday's finals. The Madison Memorial athletes were prepared and performed at a top level both days to end the season on a high note. The girls team just missed out on scoring (top 8 performances score) while the boys finished in 6th place totalling 30 points. Madison Memorial looks forward to bringing even more athletes back next season and continuing a proud tradition of success in track & field.
Daurice F capped a storied Madison Memorial career on Saturday becoming the most decorated boys state track & field competitor in school history with his 3rd individual STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. (JMM athletes with 2 state championships include Dan Cautley, Charlton Hamer, Phil Downs, & Jester Weah). In the process of winning the 110m hurdles Daurice improved his SCHOOL RECORD time to 14.04 and broke a 33 year old STATE MEET RECORD. His time of 14.04 is the 2nd best time EVER run by a Wisconsin high school athlete and ranks as the 29th fastest time in the NATION by a high school athlete thus far this spring. In addition to his success in the 110m hurdles Daurice added two other STATE RUNNER-UP performances in the Long Jump and 300m Hurdles. His leap of 23' 5" in the long jump improved his SCHOOL RECORD. While his time of 38.25 was a personal record in moves him into the top 30 all-time in Wisconsin state history. Over Daurice's high school career he earned 3 state championships, 2 state runner-ups, & a 3rd place at the WIAA state meets.
Micah P competed at state in both the 110m hurdles & triple jump. Micah ran a nice race on Friday in the 110m hurdles finishing 12th in 15.36 just missing finals (top 10 make finals). On Saturday Micah came out after the storm delay with bounce in his step as he leaped 45' 3.5" on his very first jump in trials. This leap was a new PR and held up throughout the competition for a 5th place finish. With his podium finish Micah earned four team points and capped a great four year career at Madison Memorial
Kayla G competed in her first state track & field meet on Friday in the girls pole vault. Kayla made both 10'0 & 10'6 on her first attempts before the bar was raised to a new PR height of 11'0. Kayla didn't make 11' 0 but her 10' 6" clearance with no misses landed her in 10th place. Kayla's season best of 10'9" means she will be graduating from Madison Memorial as the 2nd best pole vaulter in school history.
Sophomores Holly H and Sydney S competed in their first state championships and both handle the hype and stress of the state meet very admirably. Hopefully both gained valuable experience that will allow them to return in the future. Holly H threw the discus 118' 2" in the flights to earn a spot in the 10 person final. In finals she had a couple throws that could have moved her up that just landed out of bounds. Her throw of 118' 2" placed her in 9th place and has her ready to come back for more next season. In the high jump Sydney S cleared 4'10 on her first attempt and then also made 5'0" on her 3rd attempt. She was not quite able to make 5'2" (her PR) and settled for a 16th place finish. It was an extraordinary learning experience for Sydney who hopes to be back in high jump and maybe even more events next season.
The 2014 State Championships was another great experience for the Madison Memorial Track & Field program. Daurice, Micah, Kayla, Holly, & Sydney represented their teammates and fellow spartans wonderfully. Next season has many young talented athletes returning and promises to be just as successful if not more successful than this season. Put in the work over the next 9 months to be ready to contribute towards the continuing tradition of Madison Memorial Track & Field

JMM State Qualifiers
What does it take to make it to state in track & field? There are many qualities that compose a state qualifier for track & field. A combination of hard work, athleticism, dedication, skill, perseverance, and positive attitude can be found in all of the qualifiers this season from Madison Memorial. The group is made up of 2 boys & 3 girls, 3 seniors & 2 sophomores, 3 three sport athletes & 2 two sport athletes, and 5 great representatives of Madison Memorial. For young athletes on the team hoping to participate at state track & field next season you can learn a lot from these competitors.
On the face of things it would seem that Daurice, Micah, Kayla, Sydney, & Holly made it to state because they are the best athletes on the team. While this is partially true it does not tell the whole story behind what got these athletes to the point of being state qualifiers. Since they were freshman (even before for many of them) they have been dedicated to improving themselves as athletes. They have all participated in off-season lifting, they are all multi-sport athletes at Memorial, they have all seeked out opportunities to improve in their specific discipline, and they are all willing to put in the extra time to improve as an athlete. This can be ANYONE on our track & field team...if you are willing to make the commitment.
They all started from somewhere (it didn't happen over night):
Daurice ran 17.7 in his first 110m hurdle race (he set the school record this year at 14.05), he opened up in the 300m hurdles with a time of 45.5 (his PR is sub 39.0), and he didn't start long jumping until he was a soph when he jumped 18' 8.5" (he holds the school record at 23' 3.5").
Micah jumped 36' 4.5" in the triple jump as a freshman (currently 4th on the Spartan Seven at 45' 3") and didn't start running hurdles until his junior year with a time of 17.0 (he qualified to state with a 15.43)
Kayla pole vaulted 7' 6" as a freshman (now is #2 on the Spartan Seven with a vault of 10' 9")
Sydney started in the high jump as a freshman clearing 4' 6" (now is #3 on the Spartan Seven having cleared 5' 2")
Holly threw 52' 3" in her first meet throwing discus (qualified to state with #2 all-time best Spartan throw of 131'9")
What can YOU do to be the next JMM State Qualifier?
- Get faster & stronger (Summer Speed & Strength)
- Improve your technique (Attend a camp/clinic)
- Join another sport at Memorial (JMM athletics)
Best of Luck to Daurice, Micah, Kayla, Sydney, & Holly as they travel to UW-La Crosse to represent Madison Memorial this weekend.

WIAA Sectional @ Mansfield Stadium
THANK YOU
Parents, volunteer student athletes, volunteer adults, teacher workers, and everyone who helped put on a great meet. Thanks so much for your assistance Friday evening in hosting the WIAA D1 Sectional. Madison Memorial pulled off a great event because of the hard work and volunteering that you provided. The Madison Memorial athletes and coaches really appreciate you taking the time from your busy schedules to help make sure this event was a success. Not only did our athletes compete at a high level we provide a meet that allowed all athletes to have a great experience.Friday night was the last step in making it to the WIAA State Championships in LaCrosse. The top 8 athletes from regionals were competing for 3 spots to qualify for the State meet. This time of year you are seeing the best competition and although not all our athletes qualified for state all our athletes rose up to the high level of competition and represented Madison Memorial Track & Field valiantly Friday evening. For some athletes their season came to a close but many of our underclassmen gained valuable experience for what it will take next season to qualify even more competitors to state. Madison Memorial scored 49 points in the girls competition to finish in 6th place (out of 18 teams) and the boys accumulated 57 points for a 4th place finish. The Spartans will be sending 5 athletes to state representing the team in 8 different events.

Girls JV Conference @ Beloit HS
The Madison Memorial girls JV track & field athletes traveled to Beloit HS Thursday night to take their turn at conference dominance and the final Big 8 event of the season. Our girls team has smaller numbers than we would like but the girls who were available to compete at the JV meet represented very well. Although we are not as deep as many of the other JV teams, the girls scored 39 points for 6th place in the meet. This brought a close to a nice season for our JV athletes.
The girls team were led by 2nd place finishes in the 4x800m relay (11:45) and 1600m run by Kyra H in 5:56. Other girls scoring with their top 8 finish include: 3rd place by Sarah H in 200m dash (28.5), 4th place by Allison H in long jump (13' 9"), 6th by Carlie L in the 100m hurdles (19.5), 7th place by Flo L in the 400m run (1:10.7), & Lindsey O in long jump (13' 3"), and 8th place by Molly E in the 400m dash (1:10.8). The temperature may not have indicated that spring was here but the fast times, big heights, long distances, & top performances heated up the night at the 2014 Monona Grove Invitational. Madison City Championships - Boys = 1st place - Girls = 1st place
Two months of hard work and competition was rewarded Tuesday night as the Madison Memorial boy & girls track & field teams BOTH defended their Indoor City Championship. The boys team amassed 125 points holding off a close challenge by LaFollette who scored 111points. While the girls dominated again scoring 135 points easily outdistancing LaFollette 2nd place total of 94 points. Both squads competed admirably on a cool and overcast night against the best in the city of Madison. This was a great kick off for both teams as they head into the championship stretch of the season. Hopefully the Frosh & JV teams can repeat this type of performance on Wednesday evening.

A beautiful spring day greeted a small committed group of Madison Memorial girls track & field athletes who traveled to Homestead HS in Mequon to take on some talented southeastern Wisconsin competition. These girls represented their team amazingly today scoring 48 points to place 6th out of 16 schools. We look for even better performances from both varsity & jv kids as we enter championship season and hope for some more beautiful spring weather.
The girls team were led by their lone event champion senior captain Christina M who through a lifetime PR of 113' 8" to earn the win in the discus. Her sophomore teammate Holly H also PRed (by 10 feet) in the discus throwing 103' 10" to take 3rd place. Other girls scoring for the team with their top 8 performances included Christina M (7th - 31' 2.75") & Holly H (5th - 32' 0) in the shot put, Kayla G taking 3rd in the pole vault with a clearance of 9' 6", Mariah OF taking 5th in the 300m hurdles (52.59) & 7th in the 100m hurdles (17.74), Izzy O placing 6th in the 1600m run (6:00.14), Carly H finishing 8th in the 1600m run (6:04.59), and Margot W placing 5th in 13.35 in the 100m dash (13.08 in prelims). Dual @ Janesville Craig
Tuesday night brought a close to the Big 8 dual season as the Madison Memorial Spartans traveled to Monterey Stadium to take on Janesville Craig. Although both the boys & girls teams lost their individual dual meets many positives were taken out of this meet as we close in on the stretch run of the season. Next week begins championship season as both the boys & girls teams will look to defend their Indoor City Championship titles by competing at Lussier Stadium for the Outdoor City Championship. As each athlete winds down their season it is important that we take a little more time to get some sleep, eat healthy, stay ahead in school work, & be ready to end the season with a personal best effort.
Event winners on Tuesday night included: Daurice F in 110m hurdles (14.8) & 300m hurldes (40.5), Ryan B in shot put (40' 10") & discus (126' 8"), & Micah P in triple jump (42' 11") on the boys side. Phibi M in 100m hurdles (16.8), Siena C in the 1600m run (5:33.4), Caroline B in the 400m dash (1:04.5), Meghan S in the 800m run (2:33.7), and Sydney S in the high jump (5' 0") on the girls side.
Some notable performances from the night include: Caleb H improving 4 secs in the 400m dash, Joe P PRing by 1.5 secs in the 200m dash, Jack Z taking nearly 40 secs off his 3200m time, Connor L with a 2 foot improvement in shot put, Alec D with nearly a 10 foot improvement in discus, Drake S PR ing in the long jump by 5.5 inches, & Dondreon C clearing a new personal best in the pole vault by 6 inches. For the girls Kayla G improved her Spartan Seven pole vault performance by 3 inches, Rachel R threw 10 feet further and Mary S 9 feet further in the discus, Caroline B, Meghan S, Amelia F, & Allison H all dropped time off their 400m dash PRs, Gretchen H took 10 secs off her 1600m run time, & Julana DW improved her 100m dash season best.
It is important time of year to communicate with your coaches about what meet will be your last meet and be prepared to end your season on a high note. Some athletes will be finishing next week at city, most athletes will be done after conference, and a select few hope to extend their season in to June with a trip to the WIAA state meet. Dual vs Janesville Parker @ Mansfield
The sun was out but there was still a nip in the air and the wind was brisk for Tuesday night's dual meet against Janesville Parker. The JMM boys & girls track & field teams took on Big 8 rivals in their second dual meet of the outdoor season. Athletes continue to try new events and progress is being shown by both varsity and junior varsity athletes alike. In the team battle the girls lost to Parker 83 to 63 and the boys loss in a close battle 74 to 72. Both teams were a little short handed and hope to get more athletes back as they move forward in the season. It is important for EVERYONE to take care of their bodies, get good grades in the classroom, and be at practice every day. We look forward to continuous improvement as we close out the month of April.

Spring Is Here or Is It?
The outdoor season began this week as many outdoor seasons in Wisconsin do....COLD. The Wisconsin track & field season is an up and down season that takes the high school athlete through warms & colds, sun & rain, wind & snow, and some days all of these weather events at once. The Madison Memorial track & field athletes who were in town over break took to the outdoor tracks to compete in a dual meet against Madison East and some JV athletes partook in the Big 8 JV Conference Invitational hosted by Verona. These meets were a nice opportunity to "kick the tires" and get the outdoor season started for 2014. As we continue into the coming weeks athletes will be finding their events that they excel at and hoping to improve on a regular basis throughout the outdoor competitions. AND if we are lucky we will get some nice weather to go with improving athletes to make for a great outdoor season.
Tuesday's dual meets vs East saw both the boys and girls teams victorious. The squads were led by the following athletes who finished first in their respective events earning them valuable team points in the competitions.
BOYS 1st Places - Jake A in the 100m dash (11.5) & 200m dash (23.4), Micah P in the 110m hurdles (16.1) & triple jump (40' 7"), Daurice F in the 300m hurdles (42.9) & long jump (20' 8"), Zach H in the 800m run (2:16.0), Jake R in the 1600m run (4:57.0), Bryce H in the 3200m run (10:37.0), the 4x200, 4x400, & 4x800m relays, Price R in shot put (35' 4") & discus (101' 2"), and Trevis M in high jump (5' 2").

West Relays B & A (BOYS) @ UW-Madison
On Saturday the boys Track & Field team represented JMM in both the Class B and Class A events at the Madison West Relays. During the morning Class B section Madison Memorial was able to enter some younger athletes and JV competitors to compete against the varsity athletes from the small schools around the state. In the afternoon session our varsity boys competed against the large school athletes from Wisconsin and Illinois. Some great competition was had across all events as the boys looked to close out their indoor season on a high note. The boys took another step to improve at all levels and look forward to getting more athletes involved in the competition for varsity spots next week at our outdoor meets. Track & field is a sport that rewards hard work, dedication, and top performances. If you aren't where you want to be this indoor season keep up the hard work and show improvement as we head outdoors.
During the morning session at West Relays the JMM boys were led by Jeremy G in the shot put who recorded a PR throw of 44' 11.25" to place 5th in the event and score our only points in the morning session. Despite not scoring points in the other events our JV athletes had many great performances led by PRs for freshman Lonnie T running 6.90 in the 55m dash, sophomore Alex A with a 56.62 in the 400m dash, junior Calder B running 2:20.70 in the 800m dash, freshman Casey GT improving his 3200m time to 11:18.30, sophomore Jezell T leaping 19' 1.5" in the long jump, and junior Drake S improving to 17' 2" in the long jump. With continued improvement I see many of these athletes making contributions not only this outdoor season but into the future too.
The afternoon session was highlighted by the performance of Daurice F in the 55m hurdles and long jump. Daurice set a new MEET RECORD and state best time of 7.49 in the 55m hurdles. Additionally he jumped 21' 5.5" to win the long jump and his jump from earlier in the season of 22' 1.5" ranks him fourth on the state honor roll. Another great performance was turned in by Micah P in the long jump as he jumped 20' 3.5" to finish in 5th place. The only other points on the day came from the 4x100m relay team of Jake A, Jason W, Jared B, and RaQuan C who finished in 8th place with a time of 46.09 improving their season best. Other PR performances on the day were turned in by sophomore Jason W (6.80) & junior Jared B (6.86) in the 55m dash, senior Micah P (8.38) in the 55m hurdles, senior Jake R (4:48.63) in the 1600m run, and sophomore Zach H (2:11.73) in the 800m run. The boys team looks forward to improving with tough workouts in the coming weeks, enjoying some warmer weather at the track, and opening the outdoor season at Lussier Stadium against Madison East.

TFA (Girls) @ UW-Whitewater
Saturday afternoon brought a close to the indoor season for the girls JMM Track & Field team as they competed at the 2014 Wisconsin TFA Championships. This meet brings in teams from around the entire state and is known as one of the most competitive meets during the entire indoor season. The girls got to go against some of the best to close out the end of the indoor season and it was a great experience for all the athletes who competed. Hopefully those at the meet learned something today from watching and competing against the best the state has to offer.
Although the team did not score any points there were multiple athletes who had season bests and personal records in today's competition. Sydney S matched her PR in the high jump leaping 5' 0" putting her in a tie for 9th place. This jump also ranks Sydney as 17th in division 1 on the state honor roll. Kayla G had another great meet in the pole vault jumping 9' 0" earning her a 10th place finish. Her PR of 9' 3" last week puts her 3" away from being on the state honor roll. Amelia F improved in her 800m run with a PR of 2:35.77. The entire girls team will return to action on April 15th when they compete against Madison East to open the outdoor season. After a successful indoor season it is time to raise our goals and set our sights high for a big outdoor season. Work hard in the classroom, at the track, and in the weight room to make sure the remainder of the season is a huge success.
